Considering the extent to which we’re currently falling over ourselves trying to take credit for all and any Olympians with even a hint of Irish ancestry, I fear we’re not doing remotely enough, as a people, to hype up Sega Bodega, aka Galway-born, London-based producer, singer and songwriter Salvador Navarrete.
Having honed his furiously-inventive, futuristic production style on early releases by Shygirl, with whom he co-founded the Nuxxe collective and record label, he has gone on to produce or co-produce tracks for the likes of Caroline Polachek, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Björk and Rosalía.
Sega Bodega’s own work is equally captivating, running the gamut from introspective balladry to glitchy club-pop, often in the same song. ‘Kepko’ and ‘Elk Skin’ are favourites of mine from his latest album, ‘Dennis’.
Hopefully he’ll be treated to a few choruses of Olé, Olé, Olé when he plays to a home crowd at the Workman’s Club in November.
